Vishal Bhardwaj

My learning with Vishal ji

I still remember the year 1996 when I bought the audio cassette of “Maachis”. I was highly mesmerised and I am still in awe of all the songs and background score composed by Vishal Sir. I think the music of Maachis really was the beginning of a new musical era. I have witnessed Vishal Sir closely while working with him as an assistant and accompanist for various projects. I have learnt so much from him. Whenever I think about him, he seems like an ocean of knowledge, discipline, and hard work. For me he is an enlightened soul carrying a never ending spirit and thirst for creativity. He is an example of true spirit for the youth of our country. His persona and his work keep inspiring us to learn and explore more.

I am always amazed with his approach to looking at poetry, selecting a specific chord for a certain mood, designing an interesting chord progression that suits the emotion of the composition, extremely well designed thoughts of Indian music embedded with beautifully arranged western harmony. His selection of words and their sounds, the way he justifies the words in terms of phonetics and pronunciation, the way he narrates the story in his compositions, the way he does the ornamentation of a particular phrase, his own rendition of a melody where he rides the melody with his unique expression, and many things will stay with me forever as lessons.

His extreme sensibility that he expresses through his works keeps on inspiring the young musicians of our country. I am blessed and thankful to Vishal Sir for every bit of poetry, music, discussions, debates, teachings, laughter, and an unconditional love for me. I will try my best Sir. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Rekha Bhardwaj

My learning with Rekha ji

Year 2010 ! It was a sunny afternoon. I had the opportunity to meet Rekha Bhardwaj for the first time with my friend Arko Pravo Mukherjee, a brilliant composer. We were there for a music session for one of his songs. We had a very long music session and it was a mesmerising experience altogether. I am grateful to Arko who introduced me to Rekhaji that day.

I have learnt so much in Rekhaji’s association. The positivity she carries in her personality is very inspiring. We kept on jamming for endless hours and days working on various melodies composed by her. The way she improvises her lines, couplets, musical phrases, vocal riffs and aalaap is an example of great artistry and it reflects her immense dedication to music. Rekhaji is very serious about the heritage of Indian classical music, traditional forms and culture. Her taste of work reflects her positive energy and the explorer within her.

During our practice sessions, I have observed how Rekhaji underlines a specific idea while dealing with a chunk of notes. In our country we call it as “Sur lagaane ka tarikaa“. I have learnt from her how we can visualise and internalise the spectrum of various scales and ragas during our practice sessions. I have learnt the art of being patient with a single note and to experience the oscillation happening in the moment. When she closes her eyes and sings a long note with different graces with specific initiation and landing, it is just amazing to listen to her and I have learnt the musical intricacies during the process. I am lucky and honoured to be a part of 'Azizon ki Toli'. Our band is a collection of broad hearted explorers, musicians. We have travelled across the country as well as abroad and created beautiful memories together. I am extremely thankful to God and would like to express my gratitude for keeping me associated with Rekhaji. For me, Rekhaji is an eternal source of learning. Thank You Madam for everything, I will keep learning and working consistently.
