On this auspicious occasion of Guru Poornima, I am sharing an etude named “ MY WALTZ IN A MINOR”, composed by my Guruji, Ratan Singh Chhetri. In my childhood, when I went to Asansol to learn Guitar from him, this was the first piece he taught me as a lesson and it stays with me since then. I have also transferred this to many serious learners. With my students Indrajeet Handique and Shreyans Shrivastava I have tried to record an improvised version of the piece following the cycle of 5.This version is called GRAND WALTZ. I dedicate this piece to my Guruji, Ratan Singh Chhetri and to all the guitar players and learners in the family… Enjoy this piece from my upcoming Guitar Instrumental Album “ HAPPY IMPERFECTIONS “.
Whenever I listen to Piano, Saxophone,Trumpet and Violin, I get mesmerised by the texture and tonal quality of these instruments. When I compose a tune, my instinct drives me to hum it the way it should be played by the instrument I feel is apt for the piece. In January 2019, I was in Delhi for a month for the Monsoon Wedding Workshop. After coming back to my room in the evening, I used to compose small tunes and record them on my Ipad. Later I decided to record three of them with my dear friend Abhay Sharma. He is an outstanding saxophonist. Abhay recorded alto and tenor for my original numbers. I am hopeful that I will be recording some more interesting stuff with my fellow musician friends very soon. We are already in the process of making a Guitar trio album “ HAPPY IMPERFECTIONS “. I hope you will enjoy these pieces.
I was lucky enough to get to listen to music since childhood. My mother introduced me to the world of Bengali art and culture. I have never realised how all the inputs of listening to Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti, Shyama Sangeet and Bengali folk songs helped me develop a taste for different genres. In March 2020, when we all were bound to live a quarantine life in our apartments, I got a chance to jam with my son for long hours. During this process of fun jam, some melodies took the shape of musical ideas and I decided to document them immediately. My son and I tried to fix some structures for the pieces and we practiced them a couple of times, so that we could record them in one go. The best part of this experience is that out of 8 pieces, 3 pieces are composed by my son Kashit Sarkar. It feels extremely special when I share musical ideas with my son. I have shared these original compositions with all of you. Hope you like it!
